HOW TO DEVELOP YOUR CHILD'S OVERALL READING SKILLS
Reading is a necessary aspect of everybody’s life, no matter for school, work, or leisure purposes. It is a skill that is much needed to survive and thrive in today’s world.
Therefore, every parent would want their child to master the art of reading and teachers alike when it comes to their students.
However, you may ask: what kind of activities would help my child to learn how to read or improve the effectiveness of it? After all, language is a tricky business.
Well, it has been proven that phonics is the best way for a child to learn how to read. Not only does it help your child to read more accurately and rapidly, but it also helps in pronunciation as well.
Contrary to popular belief, phonics learning is not only limited to pre-schoolers and below. If you are interested in improving your reading abilities or pronunciation, you can take up phonics classes at any point in time. This is why in KRTC, we provide phonics for anyone between the age of 3-18 years old. It is lifelong learning after all.
SO… WHAT IS PHONICS?
Phonics is a fundamental literacy method that builds a solid foundation for any child in learning how to read, speak, and write. It helps to develop learners’ phonemic awareness, which is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes, in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns
Therefore, with this phonemic awareness, your child is able to decode new words that he/she encounters by sounding them out.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
There are 44 phonics sounds in the English language and your child can begin to read once he/she learned the first 4 sounds.
As your child progresses to remember the phonics rules, he/she is then able to apply such rules when confronted with any new and complex words. For example, your child will learn when a silent “h” is applicable in a word.
Once your child has learned all of the phonic sounds, it will become an automatic process to them. When they encounter new or difficult words, they will be able to know the phonics sounds behind the letters that spell the word, and combine the sounds together to decode the word, articulate the word clearly and correctly, spell the words right, and become more proficient in reading full sentences, paragraphs and pages quickly and accurately.
When you believe your child has mastered all the phonic sounds, you can prepare a short phonics assessment to test if they can make the correct sound for each word or letter they are presented with.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
1. HELPS CHILDREN DECIPHER WORDS
When children learn the sounds that letters and groups of letters make, they can decode words they have not encountered before in their reading, and this allows children to learn new words independently.
2. YIELDS PROGRESSIVE LEARNING
With phonics principles, learning to read will be accelerated. As compared to learning how to read and write one word at a time, previous words would help children to create a solid foundation of phonics sounds knowledge. Learning new words would be a building process on an existing foundation, as compared to a lone word encounter.
3. IMPROVES PRONUNCIATION
Speech is daily life is as important as written abilities. When children master the phonics sounds and develop their phonemic awareness, they would pronounce words they already know more accurately. This also applies to new words by combining the various letters of the new words.
4. HELPS WRITING ABILITY
One final benefit of learning phonics is that it ultimately helps children learn to write by using written lessons and activities to help children master both reading and writing skills. Children also tend to develop their spelling skills as they learn which letters or combinations of letters create sounds in words they write.
IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD PHONICS PROGRAM
Once your child masters reading, it would be much easier for them to comprehend and perform not only in English but in other subjects as well. More crucially, it helps to make learning a much more enjoyable process for them, since they would not be put off by new and unfamiliar words they would be sure to encounter in their learning.
